Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Nov. 19, 2016) – Behind a career-high 29 points and 12 rebounds from senior Brody Stone, the Sewanee men's basketball outscored Johnson 102-86 in the final game of the Lon Varnell Classic, Saturday, inside Juhan Gymnasium.
Stone was outstanding. The Knoxville, Tenn., native went 10-for-11 for 23 points in the first half. That included seven rebounds and a monster putback dunk as the clock expired right before halftime.
Johnson tried multiple defenses to slow Stone the final 20 minutes, however, most were ineffective. The Tiger forward added six points, five rebounds, and two assists in the second half. Stone finished with five assists along with his points and rebounds.
Alongside Stone, freshman forward Adrian Thomas scored a career-high 17 points and had six boards while Leo Born added 18 points and six rebounds. His younger brother Clay Born finished with 12 points and eight rebounds while the final Tiger starter, Hunter Buescher, scored 10 points and added four assists.
Overall, Sewanee outrebounded Johnson 43-26. The Tigers also scored 36 points in the paint, which helped Sewanee make 57.8 percent of its shots.
The Tigers opened the game on a 15-5 run. During that stretch, Stone scored 11 points. Eventually, Sewanee led by as much as 17 with 11:05 left in the first half.
Johnson pulled to within five points midway in the second half however, four straight points by Leo Born held off any Johnson comeback.
The Royals were led by guard Taylor Gilpin, who finished with 30 points on 9-of-13 shooting.
Sewanee returns to action with a 6:00 p.m. contest against Piedmont, Tuesday.
