Centre rallies back for a 3-1 win over Sewanee

Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Oct. 8, 2016)  Despite an early goal by freshman Ceara Caffrey, the Sewanee field hockey team dropped a 3-1 match to Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Centre, Saturday, at Puett Field.

Sewanee is now 4-7 overall and dropped to 1-3 in SAA action. The Colonels improved to 9-3 overall and are now 3-1 in league play.

For the second straight weekend, Sewanee quickly scored. With less than two minutes off the clock, Caffrey tapped in her own rebound shot which gave the purple and gold the early advantage.

Unfortunately, Centre answered back late in the half when Caroline Brotzge blasted a shot from 15 yards out.

The score remained at 1-1 until the Colonels took the lead after Ceci Vollbrecht tapped in a loose cross. Eventually, Centre scored a late insurance goal when reserve Cole Jordan sliced a loose ball into the near post.

Despite an even possession game, Centre led in shots 21-9. The Colonels also led in corners by a small 9-8 margin.

Individually, keeper Katya Waters again played well. The SAA Defensive Player of the Week finished with six saves.

Senior Carrie Anderson paced the offense with a team-high four shots.

Sewanee returns to action with a noon (EST) road match at Newberry next Saturday.
