Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Oct. 1, 2016) – Despite an early two-goal lead, the Sewanee field hockey team fell just short of defeating Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Rhodes, Saturday. After their early deficit, the Lynx rallied for a 3-2 win in overtime, Saturday.
Sewanee raced out to its early advantage after scoring two goals in the opening 22 minutes. Early in the first half, junior Sarah Barry fired in an assist from Katie Wilson.
Later in the first 35 minutes, Hannah Tompkins tipped in a rebound from an initial shot by Emily Sloan, which gave Sewanee a 2-0 lead.
Rhodes finally scored right before halftime when Maddie Smith received the ball back from Jillian Christensen on a corner and fired home the Lynx's first goal.
The score remained at 2-1 until the 63rd minute. After a shot by Kennedy Brislin was blocked, Christensen fired in the loose ball to tie the contest.
In the overtime, Erin Best scored the game-winner for Rhodes after a corner pass from Hailey Mules.
Overall, Sewanee was outshot 36-6 by the Lynx. However, goalkeeper Katya Watters was great with a career-high 24 saves. Additionally, defender Nikki Ereli finished with two defensive stops from her backline position.
Sewanee quickly returns to action with an 11:00 a.m. match at Hendrix, Sunday.
