Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. (May 6, 2015) – Despite an outstanding effort, the Sewanee men's lacrosse team dropped its first-round NCAA Tournament match at No. 4 Lynchburg, 13-4, Wednesday, at Shellenberger Field.
Sewanee's season comes to an end with an 11-4 record. It was the third straight season the Tigers have played in the NCAA Tournament. Last season, Sewanee lost at Lynchburg, 25-5.
The match was close early. Lynchburg got on the board first, when Chris Cornelius scored with 10:40 remaining in the quarter.
Sewanee answered back as freshman and SAA Newcomer of the Year Robbie Berndt ripped in a shot off a pass from Joe Randazzo just over four minutes later.
The Hornets would take a 2-1 lead into the second quarter after Austin Stewart scored late in the first.
Unfortunately, Lynchburg would dominate the second with four unanswered goals. The Hornets then took a 7-1 lead to open the third when Stewart scored again.
Over the next 15 minutes, Sewanee would battle back. The Tigers would pull to within four, 8-4, with 13:03 remaining after goals from Peter Brown and Cotter Brown.
However, just when it looked like Sewanee's comeback effort would continue, Lynchburg closed the fourth with a 5-0 run.
Overall, Lynchburg outshot Sewanee 50-35. Sewanee however stayed in the contest by winning a match-high 12 faceoffs. All 12 were won by senior Hal Smith.
Individually, Sewanee sophomore keeper Selby Austin finished with a match-high 15 saves.
The Tigers' future looks bright with the loss of only one senior off this season's team.
