Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn. (April 12, 2015) – The Sewanee men's lacrosse team was awarded the 2015 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Regular Season Championship with a 19-5 win over rival Rhodes, Sunday, at Crain Field.
The Tigers finished the regular season with a 9-3 overall record and a 5-1 conference mark. Sewanee, Berry, and Centre all three tied atop the league standings with a 5-1 record. However, the Tigers earned the title and upcoming No. 1 seed in the SAA Tournament by having the lowest goals against tiebreaker.
The match was close in the first period with Sewanee leading by one, 4-3. During the first Robbie Berndt, Hayden Byrd, Peter Brown, and Cotter Brown all scored.
In the second period the Tigers blew the contest open by outscoring Rhodes, 8-0. Three straight goals by Berndt quickly gave Sewanee a 7-3 lead. George Bukawyn, Matthew Stiefel, Byrd, and Peter Brown all followed which extended the Tiger advantage to 12-3 by halftime.
Any chance of a Rhodes comeback was nonexistent when Sewanee opened the third with goals by Berndt, Byrd, Bukawayn, and Jimmy Parker.
In fact, when Jason Lee finally scored the Lynx fourth goal with 12:56 left in the game, Sewanee was leading 16-4.
Overall, Berndt finished with six goals and an assist while Byrd, Bukawyn, and Peter Brown added three goals each.
As a team Sewanee outshot Rhodes, 48-22. The Tigers also won more faceoffs, had more clears, and also had more caused turnovers.
In goal, Selby Austin returned to his hometown and finished with eight saves.
