Behind a complete game performance from Mercer, No. 21 Rhodes sweeps series from Sewanee

Box Score

ATLANTA (March 8, 2015) – Behind a complete-game performance from starting pitcher Jack Mercer, Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival No. 21 Rhodes defeated the Sewanee baseball team 9-3, Sunday, on the campus Oglethorpe University.

The loss evened Sewanee's overall record to 4-4. The Tigers are also now 2-4 in league play.

Despite a rough second inning, Mercer was otherwise outstanding. The Rhodes starter allowed Sewanee to scatter only seven hits and three runs while striking out one.

Sewanee's big inning started when SAA leading hitter Tony Dykes singled into centerfield. After a walk by Michael Walker, Jackson Cooper drove in both Tigers with a two-RBI single.

Two batters later Jack Whaley drove in Cooper with a single through the right side.

Unfortunately, Rhodes added single runs in the top of the third and fourth before busting out the bats with three runs in the sixth and two more in the top of the ninth.

Sewanee starter Ryan Tillman was charged with the loss after allowing six runs, four earned, in 5.0 innings of work.

Cooper led Sewanee at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance and two RBI. Cooper also stole a base and had a triple.

Bill Munson, Ryan Olive, and Andrew Wallis all had two hits for Rhodes.

Sewanee continues SAA play with a three-game series at Berry next Friday and Saturday.
