Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 21, 2015) – The Sewanee baseball team closed out its spring break trip in Florida with a 4-2 win over MCLA (Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts) Saturday in Auburndale, Fla.
The Tigers are now 8-10 overall while MCLA dropped to 6-4.
Sewanee opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, as Nathaniel Howard scored on an error with two outs.
The Tigers then broke open the game in the bottom of the fourth with three runs on two hits.
After Tyler Minkkinen walked and advanced to third on two straight wild pitches, Jackson Cooper ripped an RBI single.
Two batters later Jack Whaley drove in Michael Walker with a hard hit ball to short. Derek Hullin would bring in Cooper from third a batter later with an RBI single.
MCLA got on the board in the top of the fifth, as Rory Preite hit a two-RBI double off of Sewanee starter Drew Mancuso.
Other than that one hit by Preite, Mancuso was outstanding on the mound. The Tiger starter allowed two runs and six hits in 5.0 innings while striking out six.
Reliever Mike O'Neil came in and pitched the final four innings for his first save of the spring.
Overall, Cooper led Sewanee at the plate with two hits. Ben Clune also added a hit and a stolen base.
MCLA starter Ryan Grande was charged with the loss after he gave up four runs (three earned) in 6.0 innings.
Sewanee will return to action with a 2:00 p.m. game against Hiwassee Tuesday at Montgomery Field.
