Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 14, 2015) – Seven goals in the second period helped the Sewanee men's lacrosse team defeat Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Centre 15-8, Saturday, at historic Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium.
The Tigers are now 4-1 overall and 1-0 in league play.
After Centre jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, Sewanee answered back scoring four straight times to end the first period. Matthew Stiefel, Robbie Berndt, and Hayden Byrd all ripped home goals during a two and half minute stretch.
With a 4-2 lead to start the second, Sewanee's attack exploded for seven goals and 18 shots over the next 15 minutes. Berndt opened with a goal off an assist from Jimmy Parker. After Seth Gray scored for Centre, George Bukawyn, Berndt, Stiefel, and Cotter Brown extended the Sewanee lead to 11-3 by halftime.
Centre would rally in the third period with five goals to pull to within six, 14-8. The Tigers answered with third period goals from Parker, Berndt, and Stiefel.
The Tigers then shutout Centre out in the fourth while Stiefel netted his fourth goal off a pass from Berndt.
Overall, Sewanee had more faceoffs, groundballs, and shots than the Colonels.
Individually, Berndt finished with a career-high five goals and two assists. Stiefel also continued his outstanding week with four goals and an assist.
Hal Smith also played well with 20 faceoff wins and 12 groundballs.
Centre was led by Gray, who finished with four goals and an assist.
Sewanee returns to action with a 7:00 p.m. (EST) match at No. 15 Washington & Lee.
