Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 11, 2015) – In a game that featured heavy fog at historic Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium, the Sewanee men's lacrosse team earned a 13-12 victory over visiting Wittenberg, Wednesday.
With the win, Sewanee is now 3-1 this season and perfect 3-0 at home.
Sewanee opened the scoring when freshman Jimmy Parker ripped in a goal off a pass from Matthew Stiefel with less than two minutes off the clock.
George Pratt would also score in the first. However, despite three early goals by Sewanee, Wittenberg held a one-goal advantage by the end of the period.
Wittenberg continued to lead by one, 7-6, at halftime behind goals from Zach Shy, Matt Hugdahl, and Sean Kelleher. Robbie Berndt, Stiefel, and George Bukawyn all kept Sewanee close with goals in the second period.
Wittenberg would briefly add to its advantage early in the third period after back-to-back goals from Hugdahl.
Sewanee pulled back to within one at 9-8 after goals from Stiefel and Cotter Brown. Stiefel then closed the period with a late goal with 51 seconds left to keep the deficit at one, 10-9.
In the final 15 minutes, Sewanee defense stepped up. After giving up double digit shots the first three periods, Wittenberg was limited to just seven attempts in the fourth.
Sewanee's offense then took advantage of the extra opportunities with two goals each by Berndt and Stiefel.
After scoring one goal through the first three matches, Stiefel finished with five goals and one assist against the Tigers. Berndt also played well with a career-high three goals and one assist.
Hugdahl paced Wittenberg with five goals on six shots.
Sewanee will open Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play with a 1:00 p.m. contest against Centre on Saturday.
