Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 28, 2015) – Rallying from a four-goal deficit in the third period, the Sewanee men's lacrosse team defeated No. 17 Roanoke, 10-9, Saturday, at historic Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium.

Sewanee is now 2-0 this season after earning its first ranked win in program history.

After the Maroons jumped in front early in the first period, the Tigers answered back when Robbie Berndt netted an unassisted goal at the 12:28 mark. Roanoke quickly answered back after winning the ensuing faceoff. Quickly Chad Smith found Kevin Jackson to put the Maroons back in front at 2-1. That sparked a 3-0 scoring run by Roanoke to close the first.

In the second period, Sewanee's offense got on track. Matthew Stiefel, Jimmy Parker, and Cotter Brown all scored for the Tigers. Unfortunately Roanoke also scored three goals in the second, which gave the Maroons a 7-4 lead at halftime.

However, out of the locker room, the momentum swung in Sewanee's direction. After an early goal by Roanoke's Chad Smith, Sewanee took advantage of two Maroon penalties.

In a span of less than a minute George Bukawyn scored his second goal of the third period and Brown also found the back of the net again.

Down 8-7 with 3:24 left in the third, Peter Brown then fired in an unassisted goal to tie the contest. Minutes later, Joe Randazzo quickly cleared the ball into the Tiger offensive zone and ripped home a shot which gave the Tigers the lead for good.

Sewanee and Roanoke would both score one goal in the fourth to close out the match.

Along with an outstanding defense in front of him, Sewanee sophomore goalkeeper Selby Austin earned his second win after making 17 saves. That included a number of stops with a man-down and in the final couple of minutes of action.

In fact, Sewanee forced 18 Roanoke turnovers and held the Maroons' top-ranked offensive attack to just two goals after halftime.

Sewanee continues its tough early schedule with a trip to No. 16 Denison next Saturday. Faceoff is scheduled to 1:00 p.m. (EST) in Granville, Ohio.
