Tome's three as time expired pushes Sewanee past Oglethorpe, 60-58

Box Score

ATLANTA (Feb. 20, 2015) – Down by one with 2.9 seconds left, junior Matt Tome hit a three off a pass from Brody Stone as time expired which gave the Sewanee men's basketball team a 60-58 win at Oglethorpe, Friday, inside Dorough Field House.

Tome's three was set up after Sewanee raced into the frontcourt and called timeout. On the ensuing inbound play, Stone took the pass above the top of the key and then found Tome.

Oglethorpe took the lead at 58-57 when guard Romello Bates stole the ball in the backcourt and raced to the basket for a layup with seven seconds to play. Prior to that, Romello scored another layup after Stone made two free throws with 23 seconds remaining.

Despite the close finish, the contest was not that way early. Behind some hot shooting and their great defense the Tigers jumped out to an early 11-0 lead. OU did not score until Chris Lawrence made two free throws at the 13:45 mark. In fact, the Stormy Petrels made their first field goal when Alex Davis made a layup with 12:53 left in the first half.

However, over the final 11 minutes, OU chipped away. The Stormy Petrels would get to within four, 26-22, after Davis made another layup.

In the second half, the game went back and forth. With the score tied at 40-40, with 9:57 to play, OU went on a small 6-0 run. However, Sewanee would tie the game minutes later after Seth Brown and Keshonn Carter made jumpers.

From there Tome made his first three, and Marcellus Caldwell hit a jumper, which gave the Tigers a 53-48 lead. However, a three by Lawrence pulled OU back to within two.

A layup by Carter with 2:28 left and a three by Lawrence with 1:40 to play set up the drama down the stretch.

Overall, Sewanee made 46.7 percent of its attempts. That included 40 percent of the Tigers' three-point shots. Sewanee also dominated on the glass, outrebounding OU 36-26.

Individually, Jorden Williams and Carter both led Sewanee with 17 points. In fact, Williams finished 5-of-10 from outside the arc. That total gives the sophomore from Chattanooga, Tenn., 147 career three-point makes which moves him into a tie for 10th all-time in program history (Peter Jones/1995-99).

Lawrence led OU with 16 points while Bates pitched in 15.

Sewanee will close out the SAA regular season with a 3:00 p.m. (EST) contest at Berry, Sunday.
