Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Feb. 15, 2015) – Behind three starters in double figures, Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Birmingham-Southern earned a 65-55 win over the Sewanee men's basketball team, Sunday, inside Bill Battle Coliseum.
With the loss, Sewanee dropped to 14-9 overall and 8-4 in SAA play. After wins on Sunday, rivals Centre and Rhodes now hold a one game lead over the Tigers in the conference championship race.
Despite making 48.1 percent of its attempts in the opening half, Sewanee still found itself down eight, 38-30, at halftime. The Tigers fell behind after BSC could not miss in the first half. The host Panthers made 15-of-21 (71.4 percent) shots. That helped Birmingham-Southern build an early 16-4 lead through the first five minutes.
In the second half, Sewanee fought back. A jumper by Jorden Williams sparked a 7-1 run to pull the Tigers to within five, 43-38.
Unfortunately, BSC pushed its lead back to nine, 49-40, after John Crain made back-to-back threes.
From there, the Panthers held off any Tiger comeback after outscoring Sewanee 15-9 over the next six minutes.
Overall, Sewanee did shot the ball well making 46 percent of its attempts. Despite holding BSC to 40 percent in the second half, the Panthers still managed to make 54.3 percent of their shots overall.
Individually, senior Marcellus Caldwell led Sewanee with 15 points and seven rebounds. Forward Keshonn Carter also finished in double figures with 14 points.
Larry Thomas led BSC with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
Sewanee returns to action with an 8:00 p.m. (EST) at Oglethorpe, Friday.
