DePauw opens the season with 31-13 win over Sewanee

Box Score

GREENCASTLE, Ind. (Sept. 6, 2014) – A strong second half pushed former rival DePauw to a season-opening 31-13 win over the Sewanee football team Saturday at Blackstock Stadium.

The win avenged a 10-7 loss for DePauw in the 2013 season opener at Sewanee.

Sewanee opened its first drive by taking the ball to the DePauw 21. However, on 3-and-10, DePauw safety Adam Folta picked off Sewanee quarterback Cody Daniel and returned the ball to the 38-yard line.

Two possessions later, DePauw scored first when Amen Galley found the endzone from two yards out late in the first quarter.

Sewanee responded back on its next possession. Daniel found receiver Steven Hearn for a 32-yard touchdown pass with 9:17 left in the second quarter. On the drive, Sewanee went 87 yards on 12 plays, taking 6:28 off the clock.

Unfortunately, DePauw responded right back. The Tigers capped off a six-play, 13-yard drive when quarterback Matt Hunt found Zach Alleman in the endzone from 13-yards out.

DePauw would add a late first half field goal, after Sewanee fumbled at its own 39-yard line with 3:35 left in the first half.

Out of the locker room, DePauw scored on its first two possessions to take a 31-7 lead with 4:45 left in the third quarter.

Sewanee would respond late in the quarter when Daniel capped off the scoring with a one-yard touchdown run.

Despite outgaining DePauw 359-313, Sewanee was undone by two costly turnovers. The Tigers also only managed 180 yards on the ground, while DePauw added 185.

Individually, Daniel finished with 244 yards of total offense and two touchdowns. Powers Spencer also played well with 73 receiving yards and 31 rushing yards on only five carries.

Defensively, linebacker Tony Dykes and defensive end Brandon Campbell both finished with a team-high eight tackles.

Hunt finished 11-for-19 in the air for 128 yards and a touchdown for DePauw. The junior signal caller also led the Tigers in rushing with 88 yards on six carries and a score.

Sewanee will look to bounce back with its home opener next Saturday, September 13. The Tigers will welcome long-time rival Washington & Lee to Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
