Box Score DANVILLE, Ky. (Aug. 31, 2014) – The Sewanee field hockey team could not hold on to its early lead Sunday, as Kenyon College came from behind for a 3-2 victory on the campus of Centre College.
The loss dropped the Tigers' overall record to 0-2 while Kenyon improved to 2-0.
Sewanee quickly opened the scoring when junior Janie Spilman continued her great play early this season. Spilman fired in an unassisted goal with less than four minutes off the clock, which gave Sewanee a 1-0 lead.
After Kenyon tied the match right before halftime, the Tigers retook the lead in the second when freshman Sarah Barry found the back of the cage in the 49th minute.
Unfortunately, down the stretch, Kenyon was able to rally. Goals by Christine Bloom and Cecilia Depman pushed the Lords in front for good with less than three minutes remaining.
A big key in the match was Kenyon's ability to push hard on the attack. The Lords outshot Sewanee, 42-12. However, the great play by sophomore Gabrielle Fignar kept the Tigers ahead. Fignar finished with her second-best ever save total with 18 stops. That mark was just one shy of her personal best, which she set in 2013 against Centre.
On offense Allegra Massey-Elim paced the Tigers with three shots while Spilman and Barry added two.
Sewanee continues its early season road trip with a 12:00 p.m. match Saturday against Washington & Lee in Memphis, Tenn.
