Box Score DANVILLE, Ky. (Aug. 30, 2014) – Despite rallying to tie the match twice in the second half, the Sewanee field hockey team opened its season with a close 4-3 loss against Ohio Wesleyan on the campus of Centre College.
After Ohio Wesleyan got on the board with a pair of early goals, Sewanee stormed back. With 19:14 off the clock in the first half, freshman Allegra Massey-Elim scored her first career goal off an assist from Janie Spillman.
Down by one to start the second half, Sewanee quickly attacked. Massey-Elim fired a shot that was saved by Jackie Feliciano with less than two minutes off the clock. On the rebound, sophomore Carrie Anderson tapped in a pass from Kat Mulligan nine seconds later.
Unfortunately, Ohio Wesleyan responded with a goal by Alex Petersen at the 40:56 mark.
Sewanee would again fight back minutes later when freshman Virginia Barry fired in a shot from classmate Sarah Barry.
That score swung the momentum back in favor of the Tigers. However, despite five more shots over the 18 minutes, the Tigers could not take the lead.
Then with 64:10 off the clock, Julia Melio pushed Ohio Wesleyan back in front for good with a goal from Haley Savoie.
Overall, Sewanee outshot Ohio Wesleyan 28-21. However, Feliciano finished with a match-high 15 saves.
Individually, Anderson finished with one goal on nine shots while Massey-Elim scored once on five attempts. Barry, Zuie Billings, and Katie Wilson also managed more than one attempt.
Sewanee quickly returns to action with a noon (EST) match against Kenyon, Sunday.
