Box Score 2 SEWANEE, Tenn. (April 5, 2014) – The Sewanee baseball team earned its first Southern Athletic Association (SAA) win of season, as the Tigers split a doubleheader with rival Centre, Saturday, at Montgomery Field.
The Tigers opened the series with a 4-2 win while the Colonels rallied in the nightcap with a 6-2 victory.
Game 1
Sewanee got on the board first, as Ben Clune singled in Nate Barnett with two outs in the bottom of the second.
The Tigers then extended their lead when Clune scored with two outs on a throwing error three innings later.
After Centre tied the game with two runs in the top of the sixth, Sewanee rallied back. In the bottom of the seventh, Grant Goodson singled in Chris Erdmier. A batter later, Clune scored on another error by the Colonels.
In the top of the ninth Tiger reliever Marshall Ussery, who earned his second win, opened the frame by striking out Trevor Brewe. Ussery then got Phil Brilli to ground out and Jake Johnson to fly out.
Clune led the Tigers with a 2-for-3 effort and two runs scored. Barnett also added one hit and one run.
Game 2
Centre opened the game with two runs in the first and four in the second.
The Tigers did try to comeback, when Clune singled in Cooper in the second. Sewanee added one more run in the bottom of the seventh, when Jack Whaley drove in Goodson with one out.
Despite six hits, Sewanee was undone by leaving seven runners on base.
Individually, Cooper finished 2-for-4 with one run scored while Goodson, Clune, and Whaley each added a hit.
The Tigers and Colonels will conclude their three-game series with a 1:00 p.m. game, Sunday.
