Despite effort, Sewanee falls short of upset against No. 16 BSC

Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (April 25, 2014) – Despite an outstanding effort, the Sewanee baseball team dropped a close 4-1 game against No. 16 Birmingham-Southern during first-day action of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Baseball Tournament, Friday, at Striplin Field.

Despite being charged with the loss, Sewanee starter Mike O'Neil allowed only two runs (one earned) while striking out three in 3.2 innings of work.

Unfortunately, BSC starter Ralls Pennington was up for the challenge. Pennington tossed a complete-game two hitter while striking out eight.

The lone Sewanee run came when Ryan Poole drove in Michael Walker with two outs in the top of the second.

BSC did battle back in the bottom of the inning, as Matt Brown scored David Bourbonnais with an infield hit.

The Panthers would add another run in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Sewanee will now play Millsaps at 3:00 p.m., Saturday. The Majors dropped a 2-1 game on Friday against Hendrix.
