Sewanee defeats Rhodes for second straight SAA Regular Season Championship

Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn. (April 11, 2014) – The Sewanee men's lacrosse team earned its second straight Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Men's Lacrosse Regular Season Championship with an impressive 13-2 win over rival Rhodes, Friday, at Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium.

The Tigers won their fifth straight match and are now 9-3 overall and a perfect 6-0 in SAA play. Sewanee will now enter the upcoming SAA Tournament as the host and No. 1 seed.

Despite the Lynx's effort to try to hold the ball early in the match, Sewanee jumped out front quickly with five first period goals.

Freshman Hayden Byrd opened with back-to-back scores, followed by goals from Michael Morris, Davis Brown, and Reed Daniel.

Rhodes netted its only goal until late in the match, when Matthew Jones scored with 1:27 left in the first.

In the second period, Sewanee kept adding to its lead. Conley Street and Tyler Calnan both scored off of assists from Morris. Then right before the half, the reigning SAA Offensive Player of the Week notched his 31st goal of the season.

Ahead 8-1 entering the third period, Daniel found the back of the net again with less than two minutes off the clock. Baylor Koch then scored an unassisted goal five minutes later.

Koch would go on and add another score in the fourth, followed by goals from Brooks Robinson and Byrd.

Overall, Sewanee dominated both sides of the field. The Tigers finished with a 51-23 advantage in shots and also forced Rhodes into 23 turnovers.

Along with the goals Morris finished with three assists, while Koch, Willy Feid, Brandon Barrett, and Calnan added one.

In goal, senior Tommy Healy continued his strong play. Healy allowed only one goal in 45:00 minutes in net while making four saves.

Junior Sam La Branche also played well. La Branche finished with five saves on six Rhodes attempts.

Finally, senior Geoff Pippin added a team-high seven face-offs wins and four groundballs.

Sewanee will look to extend its winning streak Sunday, as the Tigers take on Hendrix. Face-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Harris Stadium.
