OU completes sweep of Sewanee

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ATLANTA (March 14, 2014) – Southern Athletic Association (SAA) member Oglethorpe completed a three-game sweep of the Sewanee baseball team with a pair of victories against the Tigers, Friday.

The Stormy Petrels earned a 6-3 win in the opener and then topped Sewanee by a score of 11-4 in second contest.

Game 1

Despite leading 3-2 through four innings, the Tigers could not hold on late. OU scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take control down the stretch.

Freshman Tony Dykes led the offense with a 2-for-4, one RBI effort at the plate. Ben Clune also drove in one run while Gus Myer, Ryan Poole, and Jack Whaley all scored runs.

On the mound, starter Charles Warren picked up the loss after he allowed six runs on nine hits while striking out two in 4.2 innings.

OU reliever Joe Marco earned the win after he pitched 4.0 scoreless innings. Closer David Langhan earned his third save with a perfect ninth inning.

Game 2

In its best offensive game of the series, Oglethorpe scored 11 runs on eight hits. Sewanee did lead early, when Clune scored to open the game on an OU fielding error.

After the Tigers scored single runs in three innings, any comeback attempt fell short after the Stormy Petrels crossed the plate nine times in the bottom of the sixth.

Junior Grant Goodson scored two runs and also stole his team-leading sixth base. Clune, Michael Walker, and Zack Sutton each finished with one hit.

Austin Ferlita led OU with 1-for-3 effort. Ferlita's lone hit was a two-run homer.

Sewanee will now step outside conference play with a series of non-conference contests in Florida. The Tigers will open their six-game spring break trip with a 9:00 a.m. contest against Fontbonne, Sunday.
