Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 19, 2014) – Two complete performances helped the Sewanee baseball team to a pair of season-opening victories over Johnson University Wednesday at Montgomery Field.

The Tigers opened with a 15-0 win and then hammered the Royals by a score of 12-1 in the nightcap.

Game 1

A huge fifth inning helped the Tigers break open a 2-0 game. After Ben Clune walked, Jack Whaley singled. A batter later, freshman Tony Dykes singled in Clune and advanced Whaley to second. After a wild pitch, Michael Walker then walked which set up a bases loaded, no out situation.

After another walk by Johnson, the Royals pulled Nate Howard. After another base-on-balls by Johnson, Sewanee added more runs on a sacfirce fly by Jackson Cooper and a fielder's choice by Jack Rogers.

An inning later, Sewanee pushed its lead to 15-0 with 10 runs on eight hits.

Johnson would have one final opportunity, however Adam Schmidt shut the door for Sewanee in the top of the seventh.

Overall, Sewanee pounded out 12 hits and 14 RBI. On the mound, Mike O'Neil earned his first win of the season after allowing only two hits in 4.0 innings.

Fellow pitchers Marshall Ussery and Schmidt combined to throw 3.0 innings while striking out five.

Dykes led the offense with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. The freshman DH also drove in three RBI. Rogers also played well with two hits and four RBI while Whaley and Zack Sutton had multiple hits.

Game 2

Like they did in the opener, Sewanee jumped out front early. The Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the second and two runs an inning later.

Sewanee then tallied seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth, to take a commanding 12-1 lead.

The middle of the order again came through for the Tigers. Rogers led the efforts at the plate after he went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Sutton also finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and also scored a pair of runs.

As a team, Sewanee finished with nine hits while only giving up six. After three strong innings of work by starter Charles Warren, freshman Alex Mockett allowed only two hits while striking out one.

Finally, Ben Harrison struck out a game-high four batters in 2.0 innings of work.

Sewanee will continue its five-game homestand with a 12:00 p.m. contest against Earlham, Saturday.
