Box Score

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Feb. 16, 2014) – A strong first half helped the Sewanee men's lacrosse team to a season-opening 14-10 win over former conference rival Colorado College, Sunday, on the campus of Memphis University School.

In the first period, Sewanee got on the board as freshman Hayden Byrd ripped a shot into the back of the net with 8:25 remaining. The Tigers then pushed their lead to 2-0, as Tyler Calnan fired in a shot off an assist from senior Davis Brown.

After Michael Idell scored for Colorado College to open the second period, senior Michael Morris netted his first goal of 2014 for Sewanee.

The Tigers then took command of the first half by outscoring CC 4-1 to end the second. During that stretch, Morris scored twice and had an assist on Byrd' second goal. Additionally, Matthew Stiefel ended the half with a man-up goal from sophomore Cotter Brown with 47 seconds left.

Sewanee opened the second half like it ended the first. The Tigers scored three straight goals to open the third period, one by Brown and two by Stiefel.

After a goal by CC's Dylan Davie, the Tigers stayed on the attack. Reed Daniel and George Bukawyn closed the period with scores. Those two goals pushed the Sewanee lead to 12-4.

Colorado College did manage to rally in the fourth. The Tigers outscored Sewanee 6-2 in the final period, behind four goals by Henri Halle and one by Taylor Paul.

Overall, Sewanee edged out Colorado in shots 36-35.

Individually, Morris led the offense with four goals and three assists. Stiefel finished with three goals and an assist while Byrd and Brown added two goals. Bukawyn, Daniel, and Calnan each added one goal.

On defense, senior Brandon Barrett and Jake Rubenstein each had three caused turnovers. Barrett also picked up four groundballs while Morris finished with five.

In goal, senior Tommy Healy played outstanding. Healy made five saves and allowed four goals in 45:00 minutes of action. Freshman Selby Austin stopped six shots in his first-ever collegiate contest.

Sewanee continues play with a 1:00 p.m. match Saturday, February 22 against Wittenberg. That contest is schedule to be played on the campus of Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tenn.
