Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Nov. 25, 2014) – Led by guard Peyton Luken and forward Chase England, visiting Piedmont rallied from a slow start for a 79-62 win over the Sewanee men's basketball team, Tuesday, inside Juhan Gymnasium.
The Tigers are now 1-2 this season. Tuesday also marked the third straight game the Tigers have played a team from the USA South Conference. Piedmont improved to 2-1.
Early on, Sewanee got off to an outstanding start. A layup and jumper by Leo Born sparked a 10-0 Sewanee run to start the game. In fact, Piedmont would miss its first three shots and have three turnovers the first four minutes of action.
Luken finally ended the Lions' drought with a three. Sewanee responded with a jumper from Keshonn Carter on the ensuing possession. However, over the final 15 minutes of the first half, Piedmont would settle in.
The Lions would eventually chip away at their deficit over the next 10 minutes. After Jorden Williams hit three free throws for Sewanee, Luken would pull Piedmont to within one, 27-26, with back-to-back threes.
Williams would answer back with a jumper at the 4:51 mark, however another three by Luken tied the contest at 29-29.
A late 6-1 run would give Piedmont a three-point lead, 35-32, at halftime.
Out of the locker room, Sewanee would retake the lead with 18:34 to play when Marcellus Caldwell and Matt Tome made consecutive jumpers.
Unfortunately, two straight threes by England and Luken sparked a 14-7 run by the Lions.
Sewanee would answer back with a 9-4 run to pull to within two, 56-54, after six straight points from Williams.
The Tigers then stayed to within a possession of Piedmont until 9:44 left to play. Two free throws by Chris Meeks helped the Lions stretch their lead back to four, 60-56.
Another free throw by Meeks and a three by Luken quickly extended Piedmont's lead back to eight, 64-56, with 7:53 left.
Down the stretch, Piedmont outscored 14-6 to close any chance of a Sewanee comeback.
As a team, Sewanee was undone by 15 second-chance points by Piedmont. The Lions also grabbed 12 offensive rebounds, which led to a 39-29 advantage by Piedmont on the boards.
After shooting 46.2 percent in the first half, Sewanee cooled off in the second making only 11-of-28 attempts (39.3 percent).
Williams paced Sewanee with 21 points. Despite being in foul trouble, Carter added 11 points while Born finished with six points and six rebounds despite playing only one half.
Sewanee will take a week off before returning to action with a 7:00 p.m. (EST) contest at Hiwassee, December 2.
