Box Score DANVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 4, 2014) – Despite a second-half comeback by the Sewanee men's basketball team, the Tigers fell just short at Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Centre, 48-46, Saturday, inside Alumni Gymnasium.
After trailing by seven, 29-22, at halftime, the Tigers opened the second half on an 8-2 to run which cut Centre's lead to one, 31-30, with 16:21 left.
Over the next five minutes, neither team would lead by more than five points.
With 9:57 left, sophomore Matt Tome cut the Sewanee deficit to three, 39-36, with a layup.
After both teams traded field goals over the next two possessions, junior Marcellus Caldwell hit a jumper with 5:52 which cut the Centre lead to one.
On the ensuing possession, Sewanee took its first lead of the afternoon when Keshonn Carter made a layup with 5:14 to play.
The Tigers then extended their advantage to four points, after a jumper from freshman Jorden Williams and a free throw by Leo Born.
Unfortunately, the Colonels responded down the stretch. A three by Matt Gump pulled Centre to within one, 45-44, with 2:38 remaining.
After a Tiger turnover, Donovan Whiteside then made a pair of free throws to give Centre the lead back at 46-45.
Sewanee would have two more opportunities down the stretch, however a missed jumper by Williams and a turnover by the Tigers gave the ball back to Centre.
After two additional free throws by the Colonels, Centre fouled Williams with three seconds left. Williams made his first throw, however the Tigers could not come up with an offensive rebound off the second attempt with three seconds left.
Overall, neither team shot the ball well. Centre just edged out Sewanee with a 30 percent field goal percentage. The Tigers made 29.5 of their attempts.
Sewanee did manage to outrebound Centre by five, 46-41, and forced three more turnovers than the Colonels.
Individually, Williams led all scorers with a game-high 13 points. Carter also played well with a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double.
Gump led Centre with 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting. Mike Geegan and Whiteside also pitched in eight points each for the Colonles.
After winning four out of its last five games, Sewanee will briefly step outside conference play with a 7:00 p.m. (EST) game, Tuesday, at Piedmont.
Note: Saturday marked the closet game Sewanee has played against Centre in Danville, Ky., since the Tigers last won inside Alumni Gymnasium during the 1998-99 season.
