Box Score ATLANTA (Jan. 25, 2014) – A late scoring run in the second half helped SAA rival No. 21 Oglethorpe pull away for a 82-69 victory over the Sewanee men's basketball team inside Dorough Field House.
The loss dropped the Tigers to 10-6 overall and 3-3 in SAA play. The nationally ranked Stormy Petrels improved to 15-2 overall and 5-1 in conference competition.
After Sewanee jumped out to a fast 5-2 lead, both teams stay close the remainder of the half. The Tigers would take an eight-point lead, 27-19, with 6:35 left in the first half. However, OU close the opening 20 minutes of play on a 13-6 run.
In the second half, Oglethrope took its first lead of the game when Jordan Kinney made a jumper.
After a three by OU's Connor Smith, Sewanee answered back with a pair of free throws and a three by Seth Brown.
Over the next 10 minutes of play every time the Stormy Petrels tried to pull away, Sewanee responded. With the score tied 43-43, OU scored six straight points before the Tigers answered back with back-to-back threes from Marcellus Caldwell and Jorden Williams.
Unfortunately, down the stretch, Oglethrope slowly pulled away. The Stormy Petrels stretch their lead to double digits when Kinney made a layup with less than five minutes left.
Despite consecutive threes by Brown and Williams, OU scored seven straight points to take command with 1:23 remaining.
From there Oglethrope made six straight free throws, which kept the lead for the Stormy Petrels.
Overall, Oglethrope made 52.7 percent of its attempts. The Stormy Petrels also netted a staggering 20 free throws on 34 attempts.
Individually, Williams led Sewanee with 17 points. He was joined in double figures by Leo Born, who added 12 points, and Keshonn Carter and Brown, who scored 10 points each.
Kinney led Oglethrope and all scorers with a game-high 22 points. Fellow guard Alex Davis also played well for OU with 20 points.
Sewanee continues its four-game road trip with an 8:00 p.m. contest at rival Rhodes, Friday.
