Great shooting pushes Centre past Sewanee

Box Score

Sewanee, Tenn. (Jan. 18, 2014) – Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Centre made 62.3 percent of its attempts which helped the Colonels to a 85-46 victory over the Sewanee men's basketball team, Saturday, inside Juhan Gymnasium.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 9-5 overall and 2-2 in SAA play. The Colonels also gave Sewanee its first home loss this season and snapped the Tigers 14-game home winning streak.

During the opening nine minutes of play, Centre raced out to a 20-9 lead. After a jumper by Leo Born cut the Tiger deficit to nine, 20-11, the Colonels again got red-hot.

Centre scored 13 straight points, which helped the Colonels to a commanding 33-11 advantage.

Centre then closed the first half on a 10-2 run.

Out of the locker room, Sewanee played hard. However, every comeback attempt by the Tigers was answered by another made field goal by Centre.

Despite only getting outscored in the final 20 minutes by nine, 42-33, the Tigers could not stop the Colonels from outside.

Centre made 66.7 percent of its attempts in the second half. That included a 5-for-9 effort from outside the three-point line.

Despite committing its lowest number of turnovers of the season, Sewanee was undone by its lowest field goal percentage in 2013-14.

Individually, freshman Jorden Williams finished with a team-high 15 points. In fact, Williams has now scored in double figures in 10 straight games.

Fellow guard Clay Born also added a career-high 11 points for Sewanee.

Collin Lopez, who scored a game-high 17 points, led Centre. Lopez finished a perfect 7-of-7 overall and 3-of-3 from outside the three-point arc.

Forward Tyler Wesley also played well in an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double.

After four straight home games, the Tigers will return to action on Friday, January 24 at Berry College. That game is scheduled to tip-off at 8:00 p.m. (EST).
