Box Score LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 21, 2013) – Three goals by freshman Carrie Anderson helped the Sewanee field hockey team earn a 5-3 victory over Southern Athletic Association (SAA) foe Transylvania, Saturday.
With the win, Sewanee improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Pioneers dropped to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in SAA play.
After Transy scored first, Sewanee responded with a goal from senior Mary Kate McAlister.
The Pioneers would briefly retake the lead after Sydney Katz scored an unassisted goal before the intermission.
After the break, Sewanee's offense exploded. The Tigers netted three goals from Anderson and one from Warren Davis.
The final Transy goal was late in the match when Macaulay Schifferdec scored.
After firing 20 shots in the first half, the Tigers continued its offensive bombardment with 16 additional attempts in the second half.
Individually, Anderson finished with 14 shots, nine shots on goal, and three goals. McAlister added nine shots, including an efficient eight attempts on goal. Additionally, McAlister added one assist.
After starting the second half, freshman keeper Gabrielle Fignar earned the win after she allowed only one goal on five shots.
Sewanee will continue its conference schedule when the Tigers host rival Rhodes for a 11:00 a.m., match Saturday, September 28.
