Berry hands Sewanee its first SAA loss

Box Score

ROME, Ga. (April 6, 2013) – Strong first and fourth periods lifted Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Berry past the Sewanee men's lacrosse team, 11-10, Saturday at Ford Field.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 9-3 overall and 4-1 in league play. Additionally, the loss ended Sewanee's five-match winning steak. Currently, Berry, Centre, and Sewanee are all tied for first place in the SAA standings with one loss each.

After Davis Brown got the Tigers on the board first, Berry stormed back with a pair of goals. Drew Lincoln then tied the score at 2-2 off an assist from Michael Morris.

Despite a score by James Millard with seven seconds left, the Vikings scored three straight goals prior to that to end the first period.

In the second period, Sewanee closed the gap further. A goal by Davis Brown and one score by Cotter Brown tied the contest at halftime, 5-5.

Out of the locker room, Geoff Pippin pushed Sewanee ahead with an unassisted goal with only six seconds off the clock in the third period.

Over the next 14 minutes the Tigers would continue to play well, as Marty Johnson and Reed Daniel gave the Tigers a two-goal advantage, 8-6, heading into the final period.

In the fourth, Berry would start strong. Goals by Blake Gwizdalski and Cory Hall gave the Vikings a 9-8 lead with 8:37 to play.

After Pierce Leonard tied the match four minutes later, Berry retook the lead when Maxwell Smerka converted a man-up opportunity.

Down the stretch Sewanee would answer when Daniel scored off a pass from Millard.

Unfortunately, with seven seconds left Hall took the possession from behind the Berry net and rotated around the Sewanee defense. Then with one second left in regulation, Hall, who finished with five goals in the match, fired in a shot with one second left for the walk-off game-winner.

Despite Berry winning the ground ball battle and outshooting Sewanee by an eight attempts, the big key for the Vikings was the play of keeper Jordan Boreman. Boreman finished with a match-high 18 saves.

For Sewanee keeper Tommy Healy stopped 14 shots while Leonard, Davis Brown, Daniel, and Millard finished with two points each.

Sewanee will close out the regular season with two key matches at rival Rhodes and Hendrix next weekend.
