Sewanee wins SAA Championship after Morris scores in 2OT

Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn. (April 28, 2013) – Junior Michael Morris fired in a game-winning shot from eight yards out to help the Sewanee men's lacrosse team win one of four Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Championships for the Tiger Athletic Department, Sunday, on a wet McGee Field.

Morris's attempt capped off an incredible match, which the Tigers outlasted the Vikings 12-11 in double overtime.

After the match was delayed by an hour and a half due to inclement weather, the contest was hard fought throughout.

Both teams made runs early. After the Tigers took a 3-1 lead by the end of the first period, Berry responded in the second behind a 4-2 rally.

With both teams tied 5-5 entering the third period, goals by Cory Hall and Kyle Lombardi pushed the Vikings ahead by two, 7-5, with 12:18 left.

However, Sewanee did not quit. Four straight goals by Pierce Leonard, Drew Lincoln, and Reed Daniel helped the Tigers retake the lead, 9-7, with 9:16 to play.

After Sewanee scored two out of the next three goals, Berry pushed back with late scores by Bryan Byers and Lombardi, which forced the match into overtime.

In the first overtime period Sewanee outshot Berry, 5-1. Unfortunately, of those attempts, Sewanee had only one great look at the goal when Davis Brown's shot went off the top crossbar.

In the second overtime frame, Hal Smith set up the winning play after he forced the faceoff into Sewanee's offensive zone where Cotter Brown picked up the ground ball and found Morris.

Individually, Lincoln and Leonard led Sewanee with three goals. Brown, Daniel, and Morris each pitched in two scores while Cotter Brown had three assists.

On defense, keeper Tommy Healy finished with 10 saves.

Berry was led by Hall, Byers, and Lombardi, who each finish with two goals.

With the SAA Tournament complete, Sewanee will now wait one week to see if they get an invitation to the upcoming NCAA Tournament as an at-large bid.
