Box Score 2 MOUNT BERRY, Ga. (March 8, 2013) - Southern Athletic Association foe Berry capitalized on timely hitting and several costly defensive lapses as the Vikings swept the Sewanee baseball team in a pair of SAA contests Friday at Bowdoin Field.
The Vikings won the first game 12-2 and the nightcap 8-1.
In the first game of the afternoon doubleheader, the Tigers found themselves down 9-0 after three full innings. The Vikings plated five runs in the bottom of the first inning and added four more runs in the bottom of the third.
Sewanee cut into the Viking lead in the top of the sixth when James Snover led off the inning with a double down the right field line. Jacob Walker grounded out to the second baseman advancing Snover to third base. Blake Williams coaxed a walk putting runners at first and third. Jack Rogers reached on an error by the Berry pitcher scoring Snover with the Tigers' first run of the game. Nate Barnett singled to right center field driving home Williams to make the score 9-2. Bill Murphy followed with a single to load the bases with only one out, but pair of strikeouts ended the Tiger threat and inning.
Berry tacked on three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the final score 12-2.
Starting pitcher Jacob Simpson was charged with the loss for Sewanee. Simpson lasted only two innings, after he allowing five earned runs on seven hits.
Berry outhit the Tigers 16-7 in game one.
Snover led the way for Sewanee with two hits in four trips to the plate. Williams, Barnett, Murphy, Rogers, and Michael Walker also had one hit each.
The Tigers struck first in the nightcap when Rogers singled home Ben Clune in the top of the first inning. Clune had reached on a fielder's choice after leadoff hitter Snover had singled up the middle. Unfortunately, for the Tigers, it was the only run they could muster in the game.
The Vikings responded by building the score to 8-1 with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, two more in the third, three runs in the home half of the fourth, and a single run in the sixth inning.
The Tigers managed only four hits in the second game. Rogers led the way after he picked up a pair of singles. Additionally, Snover and Clune finished with one hit each.
Freshman Worth Osgood suffered the loss for the Tigers after he allowed seven hits and seven runs, in five innings of work. Of those seven runs however, only two were earned.
The Tigers will now travel to Auburndale, Fla., Saturday for the Russ-Matt Invitational. Sewanee is scheduled to open play on Sunday with a 10:00 a.m. (EST) contest against Union (NY).
