Early offense leads Tigers to a 17-3 win over Oglethorpe

Box Score

ATLANTA (March 23, 2013) – After outscoring Southern Athletic Association (SAA) foe Oglethorpe 11-0 in the first half, the Sewanee men's lacrosse team rolled past the Stormy Petrels 17-3 Saturday at Oglethorpe Field.

The win was the Tigers third straight, which gives Sewanee a 7-2 overall record this season.

Sewanee wasted little time getting on the board as Ian Gillan netted the first goal off a pass from Cotter Brown with less than a minute off the clock.

After goals by Michael Morris, Davis Brown, and Reed Daniel, Sewanee closed the first period up 4-0.

In the second, the Tigers kept dominating. Sewanee took 21 shots and scored seven straight goals. During that stretch Pierce Leonard fired home two scores.

Additionally, Daniel, Conley Street, Davis Brown, Gillan, and Morris also added goals right before halftime.

Out of the locker room OU finally got on the board, when Arness Holsey took advantage of a Sewanee penalty and scored a man-up goal with 8:41 left in the third.

Sewanee would quickly answer back by scoring the next four goals. After Geoff Pippin, John Stiefel, Davis Brown, and Morris pushed the lead to 15-1, the Stormy Petrels added their final two scores.

Another goal by Street and a man-up score by Louis Cusano finalized the 14-point margin.

Overall, Sewanee outshot OU by 41 attempts and also caused 31 turnovers.

The Tigers continue conference play with a key match against Birmingham-Southern, March 29th. That contest is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. at Harris Stadium.
