Box Score 2 CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Feb. 28, 2013) – Freshman Cooper Killen notched her first pitching win in a Sewanee uniform and sophomore Sarah Anne Hamilton had three hits and two RBI to lead the Sewanee Tigers to a 6-4 win over Tennessee Temple in the nightcap of a doubleheader Thursday at a frigid Warner Park in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Prior to the Tigers' win, the Crusaders won the opener 8-0.
In the first game of the evening, Hamilton was charged with the loss in the circle for the Tigers.
Sarah Fleming led the five-hit Sewanee attack with a pair of singles.
In game two the Tigers got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when Fleming stole home to give Sewanee a 1-0 lead. Fleming had reached base on a leadoff single.
In the top of the third inning, Sewanee extended its lead when Maddy Gould led off the inning with a single. Gould advanced to second base on a wild pitch and to third on a single by Fleming. Gould then stole home to tally the Tigers' second run. Hamilton followed with a single scoring Fleming to give Sewanee a 3-0 lead.
Hamilton produced her second RBI single of the game with two outs in the top of the fourth inning plating Claire Knepshield who had drawn a one-out walk.
The Crusaders drew within a run of the Tigers by scoring three runs in the home half of the fifth inning making the score 4-3 after five innings.
The Tigers were able to pick up a pair of insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning on back-to-back two-out doubles by Kayla Sewell and Hamilton and an RBI single by Sara Burklin to extend the lead to 6-3.
Tennessee Temple pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh to draw within two runs of the Tigers, but with the tying run at the plate, Killen coaxed a popup to second baseman Sarah Walker in shallow right field to end the game.
Killen pitched seven strong innings, allowing four runs on eight hits to pick up the victory.
Hamilton paced the Tigers with three hits, including a double, and two RBI. Fleming, Burklin and Killen each chipped in two hits.
Sewanee stands at 1-1 on the season.
The Tigers will return to action on Saturday when they host Hiwassee College in a doubleheader set to begin at 11:00 am.
