Box Score LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. (Feb. 26, 2013) – The Sewanee baseball team dropped a 10-4 decision to the Covenant College Scots today in NCAA Division III action in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
The Tigers got on the scoreboard quickly in the top of the first inning, when Jack Rogers drove home Jack Whaley from third base with an RBI single to right field.
The Scots responded with a run in the bottom of the first knotting the score at one apiece.
Sewanee struck again in the top of the second inning when Marshall Ussery drew a one-out base on balls. Grant Goodson followed with a single putting runners at first and second base. Ussery advanced to third base on a fielder's choice and scored the Tigers' second run of the day on an error by the Covenant third baseman. After an inning and a half the Tigers led 2-1.
While the Tiger bats went cold over the next six innings, Covenant plated three runs in the bottom of the second frame and followed up with one run in the fifth, two in the sixth and three in the seventh to build a 10-2 lead over the Tigers after seven innings.
The Tigers pushed across two runs in the top of the ninth on RBI singles by Jacob Walker and Rogers to make the final score 10-4.
Whaley, Rogers and Blake Williams led the eight-hit Tiger attack with two hits each. Additionally, Rogers finished with a team-high two RBI.
Freshman Brett Polston was charged with the loss on the mound for the Tigers.
With the loss Sewanee now stands at 4-2 on the season.
The Tigers will open conference play this weekend when they travel to Birmingham to take on Birmingham Southern College in a three-game Southern Athletic Association series. A doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday beginning at 1:00 pm. A single game will be played on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
