Box Score 2 SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 16, 2013) – The Sewanee baseball team opened its 2013 season with a pair of victories over Johnson University, Saturday, at Montgomery Field.
After taking the opening game, 5-1, the Tigers then earned a 4-1 victory in the nightcap.
Game One
The Tigers broke through first when Ben Clune drove in Jack Rogers with a single in the bottom of the fifth. After a passed ball, Jack Whaley pushed another run across the board when his groundout brought Colin Barrera home.
Sewanee would go on and add three additional runs in the sixth.
Additionally, Blake Williams finished 2-of-3 with a pair of RBI.
On the mound, starter Jacob Simpson picked up the win after he held Johnson scoreless, on five hits, while striking out two.
Game Two
Like Simpson in the opener, starter Charles Warren threw well in the nightcap. Warren earned the win after he allowed one run (unearned), on four hits, while striking out two, in four innings of work.
Reliever Jimmy Robbins also pitched well when he held Johnson scoreless over 3.0 innings.
After each team scored a run in the first, Sewanee broke the game open in the second.
With two outs to start the frame, Clune started the rally with a single. Sewanee then loaded the bases after Johnson had an error and hit Walker. That series of events set-up a two RBI single by Whaley.
The Tigers would add one more run in the fifth when Snover drove in Walker, after the Nashville, Tenn., native led off the inning with a triple.
Snover led the offense with a three RBI effort after he went 1-of-2 at the plate.
The Tigers will look to keep their hot-start going when Earlham travels to Sewanee next Saturday. That double-header is scheduled to begin at noon.
