Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 10, 2013) – For
the first time in the NCAA III basketball era, the Sewanee men's
basketball team has won eight straight games after the Tigers
rolled past Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival
Birmingham-Southern, 79-61, Sunday inside Juhan Gymnasium.
The Tigers improved their overall record to 16-7 and are now 7-5
in league play. Additionally, Sunday marked the first time Sewanee
has defeated the Panthers since the 2008-09 season.
Also, head coach Bubba Smith moved into third place on the
Tigers' all-time coaching wins list with his 49th
victory at Sewanee.
The Tigers quickly jumped out in front after Sewanee opened the
game on a 20-9 run. After a layup by Larry Thomas, Sewanee
continued to extend its lead.
The Tigers pushed their advantage to 20, 35-15, after senior Lewis
Affronti hit a three right before halftime.
In the second half, things did not change much. Every time BSC
would make a small offensive run, the Tigers responded with a spurt
of their own.
The Panthers would cut their deficit to 14, 65-51, with 5:22 to
play, however, Sewanee answered with an 11-4 rally the next two
minutes.
Overall, the Tigers finished 32-of-58 from the floor.
Defensively, Sewanee limited BSC to 27.1 percent shooting, which
included a 5-of-34 effort outside the three-point line.
Additionally, Sewanee forced 17 Panther turnovers, which led to 23
points.
Individually, junior Valentino
Bryant led Sewanee with a game-high 24 points. Additionally,
senior Tyler Brown
closed out his career at home with 19 points and seven
rebounds.
Freshman forward Keshonn
Carter also played well with 13 points, four rebounds, and a
career-high five steals.
Guard Kevin Kegarise led BSC with a team-high 17 points.
The Tigers will look to extend their winning streak to nine with
an 8:00 p.m., contest at rival Rhodes, Friday.
