Box Score ROME, Ga. (Feb. 1, 2013) – The Sewanee men's basketball team rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit to defeat Southern Athletic Association (SAA) foe Berry, 41-38, Friday inside the Cage Center
Play was slow early. Despite Berry's 19-14 halftime lead, neither team shot better than 36 percent in the first half.
In the second half, it was all Vikings early. Berry opened the first seven minutes on a 13-5 run. Despite being down 14, 32-18, with 13:24 to play, Sewanee responded. After a pair of free throws by senior Brett Bouldin, Sewanee scored 10 of the next 13 points.
During that run, Valentino Bryant took over. The current SAA Player of the Week scored seven points in a three minute stretch to help cut the deficit to three, 35-32, with 7:57 to go.
Over the next four minutes, the Tigers continued to chip away. A pair of free throws by freshman Keshonn Carter gave the Tigers their first lead of the second half, 38-36, with 3:11 to play.
Down the stretch, the Tigers stayed clutch. After a pair of free throws by Bryant, Berry pulled to within two, 40-38, with 33 seconds to go. However, after holding the Vikings to only one field goal the final nine minutes, Sewanee defense stepped up again. The Tigers forced a pair of turnovers the last 30 seconds, which helped seal the Tigers' fourth straight win.
Despite having its lowest field-goal percentage of the season, Sewanee overcame its poor shooting by forcing 23 turnovers.
Individually, Bryant led the Tigers with a game-high 12 points. Additionally, Carter was the only other Tiger in double figures with 10 points.
Sewanee will quickly return to action with an 8:00 p.m., (EST) contest at Oglethorpe, Saturday.
