Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. (Nov. 8, 2013) – NCAA Division I program Furman used an early second-half scoring run to down the Sewanee men's basketball team, 66-49, Friday inside Timmons Arena.
The game was an exhibition contest for the Tigers and the season-opener for the Paladins.
Sewanee lead 7-2 by the first media timeout behind three-point baskets by sophomore Seth Brown and freshman Jorden Williams.
The Tigers continued to lead midway through the half behind Williams's play. The first-year guard hit two more deep threes by the second timeout.
Later in the half, sophomore forward Keshonn Carter pushed the Tiger lead to 15-11 with a jumper at the elbow of the free throw line.
Unfortunately, Furman answered with a small run. The Paladins responded with a 10-4 run over the next six minutes.
Furman eventually led 25-21 at the break, after they closed the half on a 10-2 spurt.
In the second half, the Paladins opened on a 23-6 run. During that stretch, forward Larry Wideman scored 13 of his game-high 25 points.
Despite the deficit, the Tigers continued to play hard. A three by Matt Tome and back-to-back free throws from Marcellus Caldwell, cut the lead to 61-49 at the 1:54 mark.
Overall, Sewanee shot 32 percent from the field while limiting Furman to 36 percent. The biggest difference in game was Furman's ability to score second-chance points. The Paladins grabbed 17 offensive rebounds, which led to 17-8 advantage.
Individually, Williams led the Tigers with 17 points in his first-ever collegiate game. Carter also finished in double figures with 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Sewanee will officially start the 2013-14 season against Crown College next Friday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. inside Juhan Gymnasium.
