Tigers open Lon Varnell Classic by rolling past Crown, 80-45

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Nov. 15, 2013) – After a sluggish start, the Sewanee men's basketball team cruised to an 80-45 season opening win against Crown College, Friday, inside Juhan Gymnasium.  

After Crown (0-1) opened the game on a 7-1 run, the Tigers came alive. Sewanee used a 23-7 spurt over the next 10 minutes to take command.

The Tigers continued to roll after a three by sophomore Seth Brown and layup by Byron Turner pushed the lead to 11, 29-18 late in the first half.

In the second half, things did not change much. The Tigers quickly extended their lead to 24, 50-26, with a free throw by Alex Arnold.

Later in the half, Sewanee closed the game on a 30-19 run.

The Tigers finished with a 53.8 field goal percentage. That total included a 15-of-26 effort in the second half.

Additionally, Sewanee played outstanding defense. After the quick start by Crown, the Tigers limited the Storm to a 35.7 percent effort from the floor.

Sewanee also forced 23 turnovers which led to 27 points.

Individually, sophomore forward Keshonn Carter led Sewanee with 15 points. Turner and junior guard Marcellus Caldwell each finished with seven points. In fact, every player on the Sewanee roster played and scored.

Guard Josh Farmer led Crown with a game-high 21 points.

The Tigers will quickly return to action with a 3:00 p.m., contest against Columbia International, Saturday.

CIU dropped a 110-97 contest against Brescia in the second game of the doubleheader, Friday.
