Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Oct. 5, 2013) – A hat trick by freshman Shelby Meckstroth, helped the Sewanee women's soccer team roll past SAA rival Oglethorpe, 8-0, Saturday, at Puett Field.
The victory pushed the Tigers' unbeaten streak to five straight matches. During that stretch, Sewanee (8-1-1, 1-0 SAA) has not allowed a single goal and outscored its opponents 21-0.
Additionally, the Tigers tied their 2012 wins total in only the 10th match this season.
In the first half, Meckstroth scored the first goal of the match when Elizabeth Eidson found the freshman forward in the 14th minute.
Sewanee led 2-0 at halftime, as junior Jamie Samociuk scored her second goal of the season off a strong assist from Katie Morrison.
Out of the locker room, the Tigers quickly extended their lead when Meckstroth fired home another shot off the assist from Olivia O'Brien and Morrison.
After a goal by Morrison, Meckstroth capped off her scores with a goal in the 56th minute.
Nine minutes later, Tyler Edell pushed the lead to 6-0 when she found the back of the net off another Morrison assist.
Sewanee added its final two goals, when Emily Driver and O'Brien scored in the 71st and 77th minutes.
Overall, Sewanee dominated the statistics. The Tigers finished with 26 shots and four corner kicks.
Individually, Meckstroth led the attack with six points and three goals on seven shots. Additionally, O'Brien finished with a season-high two goals and an assist while Morrison added a career-high four assists.
On defense, Martha Dinwiddle, Grace Priest, Eidson, Baker Walls, Ellie Quinn, and keeper Olivia Glascoe limited Oglethorpe to only three shots en route to the Tigers' fifth straight shutout.
Sewanee will put its five-match winning streak on the line at Millsaps Friday, October 11th. That match is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. in Jackson, Mississippi.
