Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Oct. 27, 2013) – Despite an outstanding effort by the Sewanee field hockey team, the Tigers dropped a 2-1 match against Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival No. 25 Centre, Sunday, at Puett Field.
The nationally ranked Colonels scored first, as Chelsea Klein pushed in her shot early in the first half.
Six minutes later, Sewanee responded when freshman Catherine Estes fired a long pass into the circle where freshman Carrie Anderson redirected the assist into the cage.
Both teams battle back and forth throughout the second half, however neither team could push a shot past keepers Gabrielle Fignar or Kirby Roberts.
In the overtime period Sewanee had shots by Anderson and Maggie Boozer, however Roberts stayed strong.
As the clock ticked down, Courtney Kulper tapped in the game-winner off a crossing pass from teammate Nicole Deherde in the 80th minute.
Individually, Fignar finished with a career-high 19 saves in 80 minutes of action. Additionally, the first-year keeper made a number of diving and close range saves which contributed to her .905 save percentage.
Sunday also marked the final home match for seniors Tilden Davis, Caroline Williams, Mary Kate McAlister, and Karen Dawson.
Sewanee returns to action at Rhodes next Saturday. That contest is schedule to begin at 11:00 a.m., in Memphis, Tenn.
