Box Score JACKSON, Miss. (Jan. 6, 2013) – The Sewanee men's basketball team keeps finding itself in close games. Unfortunately, the results have stayed the same for the Tigers.
For the third time this season, Sewanee (5-4, 0-3 SAA) dropped a game by less than three points as the Tigers fell at Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Millsaps, 53-52, Sunday in overtime.
Throughout regulation both teams made a series of runs to keep the score close. Sewanee took an early 7-0 lead before the Majors stormed back with a 7-0 spurt of their own.
Later in the half, Sewanee finally picked up its offense behind the play of freshman Keshonn Carter. The Tiger newcomer scored the final seven points of the half, which pushed Sewanee ahead 21-18 at the break.
Out of the locker, play did not change much. Both teams traded offensive bursts late into the second half. Sewanee had a chance to win the game in regulation, however a three-point attempt by senior Brett Bouldin fell just short as time expired.
In the extra frame, Sewanee opened strong. A layup by Carter and points from junior Valentino Bryant and Brown put the Tigers up four with 2:36 left.
From there, back-to-back jumpers by Kevin Wilson and Ryan Berger tied the score with 1:41 to play. Two possessions later, Sewanee took its last lead after freshman Nilan Hodge hit a jumper with 26 seconds remaining.
After a timeout by Millsaps, guard Nick Cortese banked in a last-second three at the buzzer.
Individually, Carter led Sewanee with a career-high 15 points and seven rebounds. Carter was joined by Tyler Brown, who finished with a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double.
Facing a tough Sewanee defense, Wilson and Jackson Griffon led a balanced Millsaps offense with nine points each.
After a pair of SAA contests, Sewanee will briefly step outside of league play for a 7:00 p.m., (EST) contest at Johnson University Tuesday.
