Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Jan. 22, 2013) – Despite showing a lot of toughness and character in the second-half, the Sewanee men's basketball team fell to regional-rival Covenant, 62-59, in overtime Tuesday inside Juhan Gymnasium.
After the Scots raced out to a 7-0 lead, the Tigers found themselves down 13, 35-22, at halftime.
In the second half, Sewanee responded. Behind a stout defense and timely shots the Tigers pulled to within one, 40-39, after Brett Bouldin's free throw capped off a 15-1 run.
From there both teams traded scores over the next four minutes. The Tigers eventually took their first lead after freshman Leo Born made a pair of free throws, which gave Sewanee a one-point advantage, 46-45, with 6:50 left.
The score would remain tight throughout the remainder of regulation after Sam Bowman tied the contest at 50-50 with a layup with 2:33 to play.
In the extra period, Covenant broke through first after Colton McGriff converted a layup off the opening tip.
After a jumper by senior Tyler Brown, McGriff continued his strong play with scores on two consecutive possessions.
Down two, 56-54, with 2:22 left, senior Lewis Affronti pulled the Tigers ahead briefly when his three-point attempt went in with 1:50 to go.
Unfortunately, Covenant quickly retook the lead when Jon Devries made a layup on its next possession.
Devries would then grab a defensive rebound off of an Affronti miss, which sent the Scots' forward to the free-throw line with 23 seconds left. Devries would make both ensuing free throws, which stretched the Covenant advantage to five.
Despite being down two possessions, Sewanee kept fighting. A quick layup by Brown pulled the Tigers back to within three, 62-59, with 18 seconds left.
After two missed free throws by Bowman, Sewanee had one last shot to send the game into a second overtime. However, Brown's last-second three attempt hit off the back rim right before the buzzer.
Individually, Brown led the Tigers with a team-high 11 points and eight rebounds.
After their brief non-conference contest, the Tigers will now return to Southern Athletic Association (SAA) action when long-time rival Rhodes travels to Sewanee, Friday. That game is scheduled to tip-off at 8:00 p.m.
