Early spurt leads Centre past Sewanee

Box Score

DANVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 12, 2013) – A 14-0 run to start the game helped Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Centre defeat the Sewanee men's basketball team, 59-45, Saturday inside Alumni Gymnasium.

After the early spurt by the Colonels (10-3, 3-1 SAA), the Tigers (6-5, 0-4 SAA) finally got on the board when freshman Garrett Heatherly hit a layup with 14:52 left in the first half.

From there, Sewanee chipped away at its deficit throughout the remainder of the half. A three by junior Valentino Bryant at the buzzer pulled the Tigers to within 13, 33-20, at the break.

In the second half an early run by Centre hampered any chance of a comeback by the Tigers. Despite that, Sewanee continued to play hard. Baskets by Brett Bouldin, Will Downey, Bryant, and Heatherly capped off a 11-2 Tiger run to end the contest.

Individually, Bryant led Sewanee with a 12-point, four-rebound, four-assist effort. Additionally, Bouldin was the only other Tiger in double figures with 10 points.

Senior Bryon Ellis and freshman Tyler Wesley led the Colonel offense with 12 points each.

Sewanee quickly returns to action when the Tigers cap off their five-game road trip at Hiwassee, Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (EST).
