Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Sept. 8, 2012) – In the first-ever match in Southern Athletic Association (SAA) history, the Sewanee field hockey team dropped a 4-1 contest against rival Centre College Saturday.
Braving the rain and cold, SAA Commissioner Jay Gardiner, The University of the South Vice-Chancellor Dr. John McCardell, Sewanee Athletic Director Mark Webb, and members of the Sewanee and Centre field hockey teams honored the momentous moment before the match with a special ceremony.
As action got underway, Centre scored first when Courtney Kulper tapped in a Chelsea Klein pass.
Just over a minute later, Sewanee responded when Tilden Davis converted a pass from Cameron Herndon with 8:37 off the clock.
The score stayed tied at 1-1 until Erin Bacon put the Colonels ahead right before halftime.
In the second period, Alexis Hebert would add two more goals for Centre. The forward first converted a rebound in the 42nd minute. Moments later, Hebert would find the back of the cage again, after Kulper's initial shot rebounded off Sewanee keeper Ellie Barton.
As a team, the Colonels outshot Sewanee 35-13. Centre also led in penalty corners by a 15-5 advantage.
Individually, Molly Kennedy and Herndon led Sewanee with four shots. Defensively, Barton, who made her first career start, had a match-high 10 saves.
Sewanee returns to action on Friday, September 14th at Sweet Briar. That contest is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m., EST.
