Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (Sept. 8, 2012) – After giving up three first-half goals, the Sewanee men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 match against Methodist College, Saturday.
The Monarchs scored quickly when Eric McGinnis scored with only 22 seconds off the clock.
In the 29th minute, Methodist added to its lead when McGinnis added an assist on a goal by Eirik Nordseth.
The Monarchs would add one more score before halftime, when McGinnis tapped in a header that was saved by Sewanee keeper Jacob Zalewski.
"We started slow and you cannot do that against an athletic team like Methodist," said head coach David Poggi. "Unless you can match their athletic ability, you have to beat them by playing smart. We did not do that after our own kickoff."
In the second period, Sewanee got on the board when Samuel Edoung-Biyo scored in the 57th minute.
Overall, the Tigers strong offense was no match for Methodist keeper Pat Hamel. The Monarch senior goalie made six saves.
As a team, Methodist outshot Sewanee 18-11. The Monarchs also led in corner kicks 6-0.
"We prepared well, but did not execute quick enough," said Poggi. "The game almost got away from us after those first goals. Sami's goal not only put us back in striking distance, but it also showed great team character. For the second game in-a-row, we were the most dangerous team in the second half. Unfortunately, good defense by Methodist and some unlucky breaks left us nothing to show for our efforts."
Sewanee quickly returns to action with at 2:00 p.m., Sunday against N.C. Wesleyan.
