Two fourth quarter touchdowns lifts Maryville past Sewanee, 24-17

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 15, 2012) – Two late touchdowns proved to be the difference, as Sewanee lost a close 24-17 game at Maryville Saturday.

After the Scots jumped out to an early 10-0 lead, Sewanee responded. With 6:07 left in the first half, senior slotback Jase Brooks capped off an 11-play 47-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run.

After the Tigers held Maryville to a four and out, Sewanee got the ball back with 4:32 left until halftime. On its ensuing drive, Sewanee marched 67 yards on 14 plays. After three consecutive rushes by Cody Daniel, senior kicker Garrett Schlosser tied the game with a 36-yard field goal.

In the second half, Sewanee took its first lead when junior quarterback Curtis Johnson connected a pass to Brooks for a 22-yard score.

Unfortunately, as second half played continued, Maryville's offense picked up. The Scots tied the game with 11:14 left, when Travis Fielder found the end zone from four yards out.

Later in the fourth quarter, Maryville took the lead for good as Evan Pittenger completed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Ed Johnson with 6:55 to play.

Down 24-17, Sewanee did manage two more offensive possessions. However, neither drive was converted into points.

Overall, Maryville slightly outgained Sewanee in total yards, 372-366. Despite being held to 269 yards on the ground, the Tigers passed for a season-high 97 yards.

Defensively, Sewanee forced two interceptions and one fumble. Individually, defensive back J.D. Crabtree, who finished with one interception, led Sewanee with 12 tackles.

On offense, Johnson led the Tigers with 144 yards of total offense and one touchdown.

After two losses, Sewanee will look to rebound when the Tigers travel to Austin next Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., in Sherman, Texas.
