Defense shines as Sewanee rushes past Puget Sound 30-7

Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Sept. 1, 2012) – Led by a stout defense and a strong running attack, the Sewanee football team opened its 2012 season with an impressive 30-7 victory over Puget Sound, Saturday, at Harris Stadium.

The Tigers played well from start to finish, while the Loggers struggled with Sewanee's defensive pressure throughout the afternoon. The Tigers forced four interceptions and sacked Puget Sound quarterback Braden Foley twice.

After a 37-yard field goal by senior Garrett Schlosser, Puget Sound found the end-zone first when Adam Kiffin scored on a 32-yard pass from Foley.

However, any momentum built by the Loggers was short lived. Sewanee responded with a 12-play 79-yard drive, capped off by a touchdown by Jase Brooks.

Later in the half, Brooks found the end-zone a second time, when the senior slotback put Sewanee up 17-7 with 2:32 left.

In the second half, Sewanee added to its lead when senior fullback Sergio Acosta scampered 28 yards to put the Tigers up 23-7.

Sewanee capped off the scores, when junior quarterback Curtis Johnson ran in from three yards out.

Any threat of a Puget Sound comeback was shutdown, when the Logger's high-powered offense was intercepted and had a turnover on downs.

Overall, Sewanee dominated statistically. The Tigers outgained Puget Sound 469-267. That total included an impressive 449 rushing yards for Sewanee.

Individually, Acosta led Sewanee with 113 yards on 13 carries. The San Antonio, Texas native also added two touchdowns. Classmate Jase Brooks also found the end-zone twice, after he finished with 61 yards on 11 carries.

Defensively, De'Nard Ford, Grayson Middlebrooks, Murphy Walters, and Quentin Jones each had an interception. Walters also added a team-high five tackles.

Matt Gilbert led Puget Sound with a game-high 14 tackles. Offensively, Foley finished 19-of-39 for 208 yards, one touchdown, and four picks.

The Tigers return to action next Saturday, when Washington & Lee comes to The Mountain on Hall of Fame weekend. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m., at Harris Stadium.
