JACKSON, Miss. 4/7/11 – Aided by big late-inning rallies, the Millsaps College Majors swept both games of an SCAC doubleheader from the Sewanee Tigers today in Jackson Miss. The Majors came out on top 14-2 in the opener and rallied from behind to down the Tigers 11-6 in the final game of the series.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in top of the first inning of the opening game. With one out
Jack Whaley singled and moved to second base on a single by
Wilson Nealy. Whaley went to third base on a fielder's choice by
Ryne Sullivan and scored on a passed ball.
Millsaps countered with a run in the bottom of the first to tie the score at one run apiece.
After a scoreless second inning, Sewanee regained the lead in the top of the third on a two-out RBI double by Nealy. Whaley, who had reached base on a walk, scored the Tigers' second run of the game.
The Majors took the lead for good when they scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning. A six-run fifth inning and a five-run sixth by Millsaps put the game out of reach at 14-2 in favor of the Majors.
The Tigers were limited to only three hits in the first game. Nealy led the way with a 2-for-3 effort, including a double.
Jack Whaley picked up the only other hit for Sewanee.
Freshman
Marshall Ussery was charges with the loss on the mound. Ussery worked 4.2 innings, allowing nine earned runs on nine hits.
In the final game of the weekend three-game series, the Tigers held a 6-4 lead after five and a half innings, but Millsaps plated three runs in the home half of the sixth inning and four more runs in the seventh to claim the 11-6 victory.
Just like in the first game, the Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Alan Komorowski singled to lead off the game and advanced to second on a single by Whaley and to third on a fly out by Nealy. Komorowski scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by off the bat of Sullivan.
The Majors responded with a pair of runs in the first and third innings to take a 4-1 lead after three innings.
Sewanee cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the fourth inning when
Michael Walker bounced into a bases loaded fielder's choice scoring Sullivan from third base.
The top of the fifth inning saw the Tigers offense come alive as they put together six hits and scored four runs to take a 6-4 lead. The inning was highlighted by back-to-back RBI singles by Sullivan and
Ben Clune and clutch two-out, two-RBI single by Walker.
Sullivan and Komorowski led the twelve-hit Sewanee attack with three hits each. Whaley and Nealy added two hits apiece to the total. Walker drove in three runs in the contest.
Jacob Simpson was the starting and losing pitcher for the Tigers, allowing six earned runs on twelve hits in six innings of work.
With the losses Sewanee drops to 11-17 overall and 2-7 in SCAC play.
The Tigers will return to action on Tuesday when they host Rust College at 2:00 pm at Montgomery Field.
