SEWANEE, Tenn. 4/1/12 – The Sewanee Tigers and the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels battled in a see-saw SCAC contest at Montgomery Field today that saw the Petrels finally prevail 10-9 in ten innings.
Oglethorpe scored two runs in the top of the tenth inning to take a 10-8 lead on Corey Leff's two-run homerun to deep centerfield. The Tigers rallied by loading the bases in the bottom of the tenth frame, but were able to push across only one run on a fielder's choice by
Jack Rogers to make the final score 10-9.
Oglethorpe took an early 2-0 lead in the game by plating single runs in the top of the second and third innings.
Sewanee countered with three runs in each of the third and fourth innings to take a 6-2 lead.
Oglethorpe fought back to tie the game at six apiece with two runs in the visitors' half of the fifth and seventh innings.
A one-out, two-run double by
Ryne Sullivan in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Tigers a two-run lead at 8-6.
Again, Oglethorpe countered with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning to knot the score at eight.
Rogers and
Connor Liston led off the ninth for Sewanee with back-to-back singles, but two fielder's choices and a pop to second ended the Tiger threat and sent the game to extra innings.
Alan Komorowski pounded out six hits, including a double, in six trips to the plate to lead the Sewanee offensive attack. Sullivan, Liston,
Wilson Nealy and
Jack Whaley chipped in two hits each.
Komorowski suffered the pitching loss in relief for the Tigers.
Sewanee falls to 11-13 overall and 2-4 in SCAC play. The Tigers will return to action on Tuesday when they take on non-conference opponent Covenant College at 2:00 pm at Montgomery Field.
