SEWANEE, Tenn. 3/31/12 – The Sewanee Tigers swept an SCAC baseball doubleheader from the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels in dramatic fashion today at Montgomery Field. The Tigers scored the winning run in their last at bat in both games, coming out on top 2-1 in the first game and earning an 8-7 come-from-behind, walk-off win in the nightcap.
With the doubleheader sweep the Tigers move to 11-12 overall on the season and 2-3 in SCAC play.
The first game of the doubleheader was an old-fashioned pitcher's duel between Sewanee's
Marshall Ussery and Oglethorpe's Cory Leff with the Tigers pulling out the 2-1 win on a
Scott Ward two-RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning of the scheduled seven-inning contest.
The Petrels pushed across a run in the top of the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead they would hold until the bottom of the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, freshman
Jack Whaley led off with a single to left field. Lead-off hitter
Alan Komorowski followed with a ground single to right field. With runners on first and second base,
Ryne Sullivan executed a perfect sacrifice bunt moving Whaley to third base and Komorowski to second. Ward lined the first pitch from Leff into right centerfield scoring Whaley and Komorowski to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
Freshman
Adam Schmidt came on in relief of Ussery in the top of the seventh inning with two runners on base and no outs. Schmidt retired all three Oglethorpe batters he faced to earn his first save of the season.
Ussery, aided by three double plays turned by the Sewanee infield, worked into the seventh inning, allowing only one run on seven hits, to pick up his second win of the season.
Ward and
Wilson Nealy led the Sewanee eight-hit attack with two hits each.
Freshman
Jack Whaley's one-out, walk-off base hit in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Sewanee an 8-7 win in the second game of the doubleheader. Whaley's timely hit ended a game in which the Tigers erased a six-run Oglethorpe lead.
The Stormy Petrels jumped out to a 7-1 lead after the visitor's half of the fifth inning.
Sewanee cut the lead to 7-3 on RBI-singles by Nealy and
Jack Rogers in the fifth and seventh innings, respectively.
The Tigers rallied to tie the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the eighth inning when they picked up four runs on only one hit. Sewanee sent nine men to the plate and was aided by four walks, three wild pitches and one error by the Petrels in the inning.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, freshman
Grant Goodson lined a ball between the first baseman and the second baseman that eluded the right fielder. The ball rolled to the fence and Goodson wound up at third on the single and two-base error. Whaley then hit a drive to right centerfield against the drawn in infield and outfield that easily scored Goodson for the walk-off 8-7 win.
Freshman Tommy McClure scattered three hits over four scoreless innings in relief of starting pitcher
Jacob Simpson to earn his first career win.
Nealy, Rogers and
Allen Thigpen paced the Tigers at the plate with two hits each.
Sewanee and Oglethorpe will wrap up their three-game SCAC series tomorrow at Montgomery Field with a single game scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm.
