SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 10, 2012) – Behind a strong first half, the Sewanee men's lacrosse team earned an impressive 11-9 win over visiting Carthage Saturday, at Puett Field.
The Tigers (3-2) opened with eight first half goals, including two scores as time expired each quarter.
Up 8-3 to start the second half, any momentum Sewanee earned early quickly faded when the Red Men outscored the Tigers 3-0 in the third.
Later on, Carthage pulled to within one, 9-8, when Seth Molek netted his third goal. Fortunately, Sewanee responded three minutes later when
Palmer Simpson scored off a pass from
Trey Burdick.
After the Red Men scored on a man-up possession, the Tigers finally pulled away for Carthage when
Michael Morris and
Reed Daniel scored a pair of goals with under four minutes left.
On the day, Sewanee outshot Carthage 38-26. The Tigers also forced more turnovers and won the ground ball battle by six.
Individually, goalkeeper
Tommy Healy earned his third win after the sophomore made nine saves. Offensively, Morris led the Sewanee attack with three goals and two assists. Midfielder
Pierce Leonard also added a pair of goals on five shots.
The Tigers return to action with a 4:00 p.m. contest against Otterbein University March 13, in Sewanee.
